Uzbekistan Photography Tour

When Greg Snell and I decided to start a new travel company (TRVL), our main goal was to try to re-emphasize the things that we love about travel: the adventure, the discovery, the connections, and the community. Our goal in photography has always been trying to encapsulate that feeling you get what you’re exploring a destination. As such, we wanted to set our focus to destinations where that feeling of adventure is forefront. Enter: our Uzbekistan photography tour.

In heading to Uzbekistan, we’ll be exploring a country that is totally underrated and far from the mobs and lineups of other photography workshops. We’re going to get great pictures, and unique images, sure. But, we’re going to have experiences that will be far more valuable than any of the photos.

In Uzbekistan, we’re going to have some fun.

FAQs

What’s the accommodation like?

The accommodation in Uzbekistan is actually really comfortable. Most of the places we’ll be staying are rated as at least 3-star hotels – some 4-star. The one exception is on the Aral excursion where we’ll be doing a homestay. But believe me, for the photo rewards, it’s well worth it.

Is there lots of walking?

Any time there’s a trip that’s fairly city-based, there is some walking. We want to be walking around trying to find photos and spotting street photography style imagery. That said, we’ll be focusing our walks on historic parts of cities, and not covering massive distances.
Moreover, all walking is optional. If someone is less mobile. we can always organize other things for them to do and photograph.

Will there be a local photographer?

The short answer is yes. The long answer is that we’re still in the process of vetting local photographers to decide who we will be taking with us.
One of the goals of our new company TRVL was to empower the local photography community. So we want them involved in all our trips. We’re currently working with local operators to find a photographer that can not only help us lead this trip, but who we can help grow in their career as well.

This new company TRVL, what’s it about?

In short, the motto is: “adventure. explore. capture”. The whole concept is to bring back the “travel” to travel photography workshops. We’ve seen a sad trend lately of photography tours being these functional operations built around getting people photos of the same things that 1,000s of others have already taken.
It’s like travel photography without a soul.
It’s like photography without creativity.
And personally, our goal is to share the wonders of the world, to bring cultures together, and to allow our participants to gain experiences and be inspired by their experiences rather than the photos of others.
At the moment, we’re operating tours to Bolivia, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and Tajikistan. But there will be trips coming soon going to other adventurous places such as Ethiopia, Venezuela, Madagascar, and more.

I’m interested in the Tajikistan add-on, will Brendan be there?

Not this year,
With the new company, the idea is that either Brendan or Greg will lead the trip, and then we’ll bring on a local photographer to help. Brendan will be leading Uzbekistan along with a local photographer. Then Greg will be leading the Tajikistan tour with a Tajik photographer.
That said, in 2027, there’s a good change Brendan will be in Tajikistan. So stay subscribed to the newsletter below.
